The Oath of the Horatii

The picture shows the Horatii brothers being given swords by their father while woman weep in the background for the possible death. In 669 BC Rome and Alba Longa were in a war over territory. This story comes from Livy. At the time of the fighting there were a set of triplets living in each city and it was decided that to settle the dispute, they would have a battle to the death and the winner would win his city the territory. There was also drama between the families because two brothers were to be married to the other families sisters. Even with these dilimas the battle was fought and one remaining Horatii brother won the land for Rome.
